DHUMAN Technique- THE INNER DANCE
Dhuman has been pioneered by Padma Menon. It combines dance training from all over the world including Laban Movement, yoga, modern western dance , kalaripayattu and classical Indian dance to create a unique way of using dance.
Central to Dhuman is the Indian concept of “Bhakthi” (spiritual devotion) which Padma has interpreted entirely in terms of the body itself. In Dhuman, Bhakthi is a turning inwards and embodying of our inner impulses. Bhakthi in Dhuman becomes a commitment to the personal microcosm of the feeling body.
Dhuman uses the Indian dance universe of myth making and the spiritual and ritual modes, physical aspects like transformative processes in the body, the complex and often paradoxical constellation of the Indian dancing body and the idea of embodied ritual. These are brought into a dialogue with the universe of modern dance. The ability to create this dialogue is filtered by Padma’s training in LMA and other modern dance techniques.
Dhuman is not a way of learning steps- it is a way of thinking about dance and about life itself. |
